While at the ASFF I saw a number of different films under the genre of drama and thriller. Some of the films I saw caught my attention and I found them very interesting.

Injury time. thriller.

This film was all shot in one take and followed a football manager as he is standing at the side of the football match desperately trying to figure out how to win the game whilst being verbally assaulted by one of the star players who wants to be put on the pitch.

What I liked about this film was that it gave you a sense that you were living the story and were really involved with the character and story. I liked how the director used natural lighting which was dark, as it was shot at night, and that the camera movements were smooth and seamless.

A stranger kind

thriller.

This film was a mix between comedy and thriller with a few cheesy moments thrown in to through the audience of it guard. It was about a magician who comes to a bar and performs a graphic magic trick where he cuts of his hand an puts it in a microwave. After he does the trick and his hand is back, the film carry’s on following the character of a young girl who works in the bar that the talent show took place. The hand is on the loose, killing people around her and nearly killing her when the magician reappears and takes back the hand.

Throughout this film the director uses close ups on characters and/or objects to engage the audience and adds tension to each scene. The script in the film is well executed by the actors, the girl make the film scary and griping while the magician uses comedy to lighten the mood.

Strange weather drama.

The film shots were done with precision and beauty with amazing visuals such as a thunderstorm and snow. Each shot focused position and framing and made you as the audience sit back and really take in what you were watching.

The stutterer drama.

In this film we followed the life of a young man dealing with a stutter that is holding back, yet despite this he manages to find true love.

This was my personal favourite film that I saw at the festival as it used sound, editing and voice over to tell its story. The actor portraying the main character, delivered a breath taking performance in that he combined griping drama that made the audience feel pity for the character yet combined comedy to get the audience to see his disability as something that helped he find true love.
